Are Save the Dates really that important?

Congratulations you’re engaged, and chosen a wedding date and venue. This is such a magical whirlwind of a time and now’s the time to share your good news! And everyone loves happy news.

What are Save the Dates?

Save the Dates are like an official announcement of your wedding, and even if you have already told everyone your plans, this one piece of stationery makes it official to let guests know they will be invited.

Do we really need Save the dates?

At a guess, I’m sure most of your closest friends and family are pretty clued up on your wedding plans. However, sometimes I have found some people don’t have the greatest memories for the finer details, especially dates!
Therefore, this kind of mini pre-invitation is still important to ensure people remember, as well as informing them for sure they are going to be invited. This also alerts them to keep the date free and enables them to say no to other commitments or events. Especially If it’s a destination wedding or you have guests that need to book travel arrangements.

So overall Save the Dates can be worthwhile, they are an extra expense to build into your wedding budget, but they give your guests greater notice, making it more likely they will be able to attend.

When Should We Send them?

A general rule is around 12- 6 months prior to the wedding, but that all depends when, where and how you intend on getting hitched and how keen you are to get plans in full swing. If you’re anything like me I sent them out early, but some people leave them closer to the 4 month marker.

What design do we choose?

Just like everything with a wedding there are so many things to consider, things that you’d never even thought about, and choosing a design for your save-the-dates maybe one of them. Here are a few as the internet can be a minefield of design choices so its best to whittle it down to start with.

  • Choose a design you like as a couple
  • Do you want them to match invitations and ‘on the day’ stationery?
  • Have you chosen a wedding theme yet? This may help choose the kind of design you’re after
  • What is your style? Classic modern or Boho chic?
  • Consider your budget

Who should I send one too?

It’s a good idea to check your wedding venues capacity, and compile an accurate guest list before posting them. Only send them to everyone you’re planning on inviting as once they’re in the post you can’t change your mind. Remembering, you only need to send one per couple or family.

What information should I include?

Our save the dates simply have the couples name and wedding date printed single sided on the save the dates. However, more information can be added such as the location, perhaps a wedding website, if you have one. Or simply just the town or city were the wedding is taking place this will help guest to plan, which will give your guest a little extra snippet on information especially if guests are travelling.
